Traditions can transform a holiday into a special day. They can also bring a family closer together and create lifelong memories. As we approach Halloween, we’d like to share our top-five list of not-so-spooky traditions, starting with …
Decorating the House
Decking out the house with cobwebs, spiders, pumpkins and the like is a great way to spend time together as a family. No electronics, no TV, just good old-fashioned family time! So, although we’re actually decorating the inside and outside of the house with Halloween fare, this activity is really about having quality time together.
Watching Classic Family-friendly Halloween Movies or TV Programs
Movie classics like Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Ghostbusters never go out of style. And then, of course, there’s always, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, or any episode of Goosebumps. Many of these can be found on Netflix, so you can watch them whenever you like!
Making a Halloween Costume
Much like decorating your house, this is an incredible opportunity to spend quality time with one or more of your kids — away from technology. The memories created from making a costume from scratch will last a lifetime. Something we learned this year is that duct tape is excellent for making Halloween costumes! Stores like Target have a large variety of colors in their hardware area, which make it possible to create just about anything.
Baking Delicious Treats
Have you ever created your own Halloween cookies or cupcakes? They can be delicious and much healthier than store-bought treats — especially if you use organic ingredients and non-bleached flower. Don’t be surprised if the kids and the adults are reaching for these, instead of that big old bowl of Halloween candy. Have a Costume Party!
Bringing friends and family together for a festive Halloween party can be easy and fun. Unlike Thanksgiving, food preparation can be as easy as pizza, an assortment of raw veggies and a healthy dip. Themed music can be found on iTunes, Pandora or Spotify, to name a few platforms. Now, if you pair your party with the delicious treats you’ve baked, along with a viewing of Ghostbusters — not to mention that original costume everybody’s talking about — you’ve created a special experience for your guests, your family and yourself.
