There’s a fallacy that dry cleaning your clothes actually shortens a garment’s life span. This is simply not true. On the contrary, frequent dry cleaning prolongs the life of a garment.
We mention frequent because stains set with age, making clothes unwearable —plus ground-in dirt and soil act as an abrasive causing rapid wear of fibers. In addition, food residue and oils from skin and hair can damage fabrics and attract insects that could cause even further damage.
The Department of Clothing and Textiles, at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, in cooperation with the School of Textiles at North Carolina State System, performed research that showed various drycleaning processes have no negative effect on the properties of wool in men’s suiting fabrics. We’ve found the same to be true for other fabrics like cotton and linen. In some cases, it’s actually machine washing that can decrease the life of a garment, as detailed in our recent article on how to clean linen.
